What type of Ultrasound Scans are available?
This gynaecological ultrasound scan is available to women of pre-menopausal age. We will perform a detailed scan to look at the size, shape and condition of the:
- lining of the womb
- both ovaries
- pelvic area
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are the detection or exclusion of:
- fibroids
- ovarian cysts
- polycystic ovaries
- pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Pre-Ultrasound scan preparation
May include trans-vaginal / internal scan with consent.
Need to expose lower part of abdomen so ideally wear 2 piece garments i.e trousers or skirt and top.
Drink 0.5 Ltr (1 pint) clear fluid approx 1 hour before appointment time. Milk and fizzy drinks are not recommended.
This scan is best performed trans vaginally* for optimum clarity and results.
Please empty your bladder prior to examination for a trans vaginal scan.
*if you choose not to have a trans vaginal scan we may be able to complete the scan trans abdominally however please note that results may not be as accurate. A full bladder will also be required for a trans abdominal scan.
This ultrasound scan is available to women from 16 years of age.

Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are the detection or exclusion of:
- detection of gall stones or polyps
- assessing the liver

We will provide a Sonographer report at the time with a Medical Follow Up Recommendation if necessary.


Pre-Ultrasound scan preparation
May include trans-vaginal / internal scan with consent.
Need to expose lower part of abdomen so ideally wear 2 piece garments i.e trousers or skirt and top.
8 hours of fasting required. No breakfast if morning appointment / no lunch for afternoon appointment.
Clear fluids including black tea or coffee are allowed. For diabetics maintain food intake but also avoid fatty or dairy products.
Drink 0.5 Ltr (1 pint) clear fluid approx 1 hour before appointment time.
Milk and fizzy drinks are not recommended.
Please do not empty your bladder before the examination.
Maintain normal medication.
This scan is available to men from 16 years of age.
The purpose is to examine the testes and scrotal contents. This includes assessment of the superficial tissues of the scrotum, the testes, epididymis (tube connected to the testis) and the spermatic cord.

Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of lumps, pain and swellings of the scrotum for conditions such as
- scrotal hernias
- epididymal cysts
- varocicoeles (varicose veins)
- unexplained swellings
- testicular masses
Pre-scan preparation
The lower clothing and underwear will need to be lowered to the mid-thigh region in order to expose the scrotal area. Tissue will cover all but the affected area to be examined.
This scan is available from 16 years of age.
We will perform a detailed scan to look at the size, shape and condition of the:
- gall bladder, biliary system and pancreas
- liver
- both kidneys
- spleen and central blood vessels
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are:

Kidneys, Bladder & Prostate Scan
This scan is available to men from 16 years of age.
We will perform a detailed scan to look at the size, shape and condition of the:
- bladder when full and immediately after emptying
- both kidneys
- prostate gland when visible
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are:
- to exclude effects of urinary tract infections (UTI)
- look for causes of persistent bladder problems
- obstructions due to stones in the kidney or bladder
- look for prostate enlargement

Pre-scan preparation
Need to expose lower part of abdomen so ideally wear 2 piece garments i.e trousers and top.
Drink 0.5 Ltr (1 pint) clear fluid approx 1 hour before appointment time. Milk or fizzy drinks are not recommended.

The purpose is to examine most parts of the body (excludes breast tissue, thyroid, and the axillae (armpits)
This includes assessment of the superficial tissues (skin layers and underlying muscles)
Common issues include:
- ganglions
- lipomas
- cysts
- skin changes
- foreign bodies
- hernias
- unexplained swellings in most parts of the body.
Pre-scan preparation
Depending on which part of the body is being examined;
appropriate clothing must be worn in order to expose the affected area.
This scan is available from 16 years of age.
The purpose is to examine the shoulder and rotator cuff for a range of conditions. This includes assessment of the joint, rotator cuff tendons, muscles, ligaments, bursa and soft-tissue swellings.
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of shoulder pain. Possible rotator cuff injury or tears, subacromial impingement (SAI), bursitis, calcific tendinosis and also degenerative changes such as arthritis.

Pre-scan preparation
For shoulders please wear a blouse or separates which may need to be removed for the examination. If our practitioner considers it necessary, the opposite side may be assessed for comparison.
For elbows please wear loose clothing that will expose the elbow joint for the examination. If our practitioner considers it necessary, the opposite side may also be assessed for comparison.
This scan is available from 16 years of age.

The purpose is to examine the elbow for a range of conditions. This includes assessment of the joint, the flexor and extensor tendons, muscles, ligaments, bursa and soft-tissue swellings.
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of elbow pain, possible injury or inflammation of the tendons for conditions such as tennis and golfers elbow, olecranon bursitis, tendinosis and also degenerative changes such as arthritis.
Pre-scan preparation
For elbows please wear loose clothing that will expose the elbow joint for the examination. If our practitioner considers it necessary, the opposite side may be assessed for comparison.
This scan is available from 16 years of age.
The purpose is to examine the hip joint and upper thigh for a range of conditions. This includes assessment of the joint, the adductor tendons, muscles, ligaments, iliopsoas and trochanteric bursae and the hip joint.
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of hip pain, possible injury or inflammation of the tendons for conditions such as bursitis, tendinosis, degenerative changes such as arthritis, hip effusions and labral tears.

Pre-scan preparation
For hips please wear loose clothing that will need to be lowered to expose the hip joint for the examination. The opposite side may need to be assessed for comparison
This scan is available from 16 years of age.

The purpose is to examine the knee joint for a range of conditions. This includes assessment of the joint, the tendons, associated muscles, lateral and medial collateral ligaments, bursae, the lateral and medial menisci and the posterior knee.
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of knee pain, possible injury or inflammation of the tendons and ligaments, for conditions such as bursitis, tendinosis, degenerative changes such as arthritis, knee effusions and meniscal cysts / degeneration, cysts in the posterior knee and ligament tears.
Pre-scan preparation
For knees please wear loose clothing that will allow the knees to be exposed for the examination. If our practitioner considers it necessary, the opposite side may be assessed for comparison.
This scan is available from 16 years of age.
The purpose is to examine the ankle & foot for a range of conditions. This includes assessment of the ankle joint, the anterior, medial and lateral tendons, the Achilles tendon, associated soft tissues, musculature, bursae and small joints of the ankle and foot.
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of ankle & foot pain, possible injury or inflammation of the tendons, for conditions such as bursitis, tendinosis, degenerative changes such as arthritis, joint effusions and ganglions / tendon and ligament tears, neuromas, fibromas and plantar fasciitis.

Pre-scan preparation
For the ankle & foot, footwear and socks will need to be removed in order to expose the feet for the examination. If our practitioner considers it necessary, the opposite side may be assessed for comparison.
This scan is available from 16 years of age.

The purpose is to examine the wrist & hand for a range of conditions. This includes assessment of the wrist joint and the carpal tunnel, the flexor and extensor tendons, ligaments, small joints of the hand, associated annular and cruciate pulleys and soft-tissue swellings.
Common examples for having this ultrasound scan are to investigate the causes of wrist and hand pain, possible injury or inflammation of the tendons for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, ganglions, tendinosis and degenerative changes such as arthritis.
Pre-scan preparation
For wrist & hand there are no special clothing requirement but the wrist & hands must be exposed for the examination. If our practitioner considers it necessary, the opposite side may be assessed for comparison.
